In addition to character and printed artwork, Covenant Love Church‘s Children’s Facilities design project called for themed elements to be designed to fit into the space station theme. Wacky World Studios provided much of these in signage, overlays, and wooden structures. As the project progressed, I was able to add some lighting and design ideas of my own.
The Grid
Creativity is often described as thinking outside the box. But, sometimes creativity really comes to play when you’re in the box.
In the early stages of the Children’s Theme project, we soon realized that the walls in the rear section of the Children’s classroom building would not allow for the installation of wallcovering as originally planned. We already had paint left over from the initial painting of this building, so I presented the idea to decorate the walls with a digital landscape in keeping with the sci-fi theme.
(Yes, I watched TRON a lot back in the day.)
I created a scale rendering of the designs in Illustrator and used that as a guide to pencil and tape off the designs on the walls. Many thanks to the facilities team at Covenant Love Church who helped paint in the lines.
Donation Kiosk
A donation kiosk was set aside to be placed in the Children’s Lobby. The screen frame was wooden, so that allowed for painting. For the metal frame that would have proven difficult, so I developed custom vector art for vinyl printing to match the Lobby decor.
Check-in Tables
Before the Children’s Lobby received its new theme, check-in was done at one long central table. We determined that in order to aid traffic flow, it would be best to divide check-in among a series of four tables. Presented with the challenge of how to get power and data to each station, we opted to route everything through the ceiling. That sparked the idea to add LED effects to enhance the design.
I provided measurements for construction and developed concept art for the design in Illustrator (not shown). Nomadic Conversions constructed the tables and Wacky World Studios supplied the table wrap design. Using LED ribbons, PVC raceways for the power and data channels, and a frosted acrylic outer column, I was able to rig the lighting effects.
SuperChurch
After the planned Children’s design project was completed, we had the need to move our Preschool Assembly area (SuperChurch) to a new location. To keep everything in line with the current theme, I was asked to develop a design to match.
As form follows function, I determined which elements from the previous SuperChurch needed to be transferred to the new one (including the puppet window, backstage access, media screen area, etc.). Illustrator was used to create scale blueprints and Blender used to create a 3D concept rendering. For the design, Illustrator was used to create sci-fi elements for vinyl printing.
